Even those who usually dress casually and are not particularly concerned with their appearance will inevitably take photos when traveling abroad to a destination they may only visit once in a lifetime. Capturing a timeless and beautiful image in that moment is essential. Being able to look back at these photos in the future and see yourself exuding charm and grace amidst the stunning scenery, looking elegant and poised, will surely bring a smile to your face. Therefore, it is highly worthwhile to adequately prepare in advance for this experience.
My Tips of Travel Photography and Outfit Ideas
Preparing outfits for travel photography according to the travel itinerary may sound simple, but there are many skills to master and develop. It requires long-term practice to become proficient. Here, I share my insights on travel photography outfits accumulated over the years.
Check the colors and topography of photography locations/attractions
Refer to the Tourist Attractions for Choosing Outfit Color
Color is the soul of a photograph, so it is essential to pay attention to color coordination. Before embarking on a trip, it is common to research the destinations, right? Therefore, when packing your luggage, it is important to consider the attractions on your itinerary. For instance, if you plan to visit a castle and wish to take a photo with it, it is beneficial to understand what the exterior of the castle looks like. For example, both the Château de Chambord and Château de Chillon have white exteriors, allowing for various color choices in clothing to stand out in photos. In reality, many colors of clothing can be selected. In my case, I opted for a red windbreaker paired with a red and yellow scarf, resulting in excellent photo outcomes. When taking photos indoor, it is essential to consider the on-site colors. For example, during my stay at a boutique apartment in Heidelberg, the room's main colors were blue and white. I chose to wear a red dress to obtain an excellent photographic outcome.
For those who enjoy autumn outings, the layered beauty of maple leaves is a sight to behold. It is advisable to wear contrasting colors such as deep blue, dark green, brown, camel, etc., which easily stand out against the backdrop of red maple. This ensures that photos taken capture the true colors. Referencing the image below, during my visit to Heidelberg in autumn, I took a photo with a backdrop of maple leaves. I was wearing a dark green jumpsuit paired with a peach-colored scarf resembling maple leaves, harmonizing with the red maple leaves in the background, creating a perfect effect and leaving behind beautiful memories.
When taking photos by the seaside, it is recommended to wear clothing with floral patterns or bright colors to complement the beautiful backdrop of the blue sky and sea.
Appropriate Dressing upon Local Topography and Landforms
Before packing your luggage, it is advisable to consider the topography and terrain of the destination in order to dress appropriately. Otherwise, improper attire worn by tourists visiting a particular location may result in penalties. For instance, the Cinque Terre National Park in Italy is renowned for its pristine environment and relatively undeveloped nature. The villages in this area are built along the mountainside, with pathways consisting of staircases. If you plan to visit multiple villages, you will need to hike or take a boat to travel between the five villages, involving frequent embarkations and disembarkations. Long skirts and short skirts are not practical for this type of excursion. Therefore, when visiting such destinations, dresses and shorts are definitely not ideal choices. Instead, opting for trousers or wide-legged pants would be more suitable. It is crucial not to wear flip-flops, as they not only make walking on mountain paths difficult but have also led to numerous tourists being unable to descend the mountain and requiring rescue by local volunteer units. Due to the rise in similar incidents, the Cinque Terre National Park has decided to fine tourists wearing flip-flops since 2019.
Therefore, when visiting the Cinque Terre , it is advisable to dress in a light and simple manner, considering the backdrop of the blue sky and sea, juxtaposed with the vibrant colors of the mountain village. Wearing intricately patterned clothing may not stand out in photos, so it is recommended to opt for cotton or denim lightweight attire, such as pairing denim wide-leg pants with a white top, for a more complementary effect with the colorful houses in photographs.
Enhancing the Display of Photos with Accessories
By incorporating some accessories into your outfit, you can add a finishing touch that enhances your overall look and brings vibrancy to the scene. For example, during a photoshoot at the University of Mannheim in Germany, I wore a navy blue polka dot jumpsuit paired with a white fitted cardigan to stand out from the red palace backdrop. While the initial attire may have seemed ordinary, it could appear dull in photographs. However, by adding a red silk scarf, the picture instantly became more vibrant.
A lightweight peach-colored windproof and rainproof jacket paired with a pink-toned large silk scarf adds an elegant and refined touch to the ensemble.
Combining different tops and bottoms helpful to add variety to your outfit and streamline your luggage.
When it comes to styling, mixing and matching separates offers more versatility than a one-piece dress. Opt for easily combinable bottoms like jeans or denim skirts, wide-leg trousers, etc., and then prepare a few standout tops to create different looks. This approach not only adds variety to your outfits but also reduces the need to pack complete sets of clothing. Remember that one-piece garments limit styling options since they cannot be separated. In such cases, accessories like hats, scarves, shawls, cardigans, jackets, etc., can be utilized to alter the overall appearance. In essence, by leveraging multiple styling options, you can streamline your luggage efficiently.
Enhance Your Style with Accessories and Shoes
The types and functions of accessories are as follows: hats, scarves, silk scarves, gloves, long/short boots, high heels.
Hat: In addition to making yourself more stylish, wearing a hat can also make you look taller (time counts against every second, and every inch counts against your figure)
Scarf: Add color and layering to your outfit to make yourself more three-dimensional and stylish.
Gloves: In winter, using gloves of the same color as your scarf can help you stand out from your dark coat and make your photos look lively and bright.
Silk scarves: In addition to adding layers of color, silk scarves can also give you a sense of elegance. Especially when taking a boat trip on the Seine River, long silk scarves flowing in the wind can make the picture appear romantic.
Long/short boots: Boots often worn when traveling in winter play a very important role in taking full-body photos. They must be matched with the whole body to make the whole photo ruined. Considering that there are many opportunities for walking during travel, and long boots are bulky and difficult to carry, So usually I only prepare dark flat boots to match all my winter clothes, but if you are a color master, white boots can be very fashionable when paired well.
High heels: When taking full-body photos in high-end hotels and magnificent palaces, wearing the right high heels can make the photos stand out even more.
Wearing a hat for sun protection and also adds a stylish touch to your photos
Wearing a suitable hat while taking photos with scenic views can enhance the appearance of the subject and emphasize the focal point.
When the background lighting is dim during a photoshoot, using a light-colored hat can make the subject stand out.
The vibrant colors of the hat illuminated the dull scene, making the photograph appear more vivid.
Matching accessories and clothing in the same color scheme can enhance the overall aesthetic appeal. Pairing a purple top with a purple hat and necklace exudes a romantic charm.
Enhance the formality of your attire and capture a sense of quality and romance by choosing the right footwear.
Various outfits create different impressions when paired with different shoes. For instance, a dress worn with high heels appears more formal and is suitable for occasions like formal events or restaurants with dress codes. Therefore, it is advisable to review your itinerary before packing and plan your travel outfits accordingly. Opt for casual shoes when appropriate and avoid sneakers when high heels are more fitting. This approach ensures a cohesive look in photos.
Exercise Caution When Choosing to Wear Black Clothing
In winter, we often wear dark-colored coats or outerwear. Although black clothing is very stain-resistant, photos taken in black clothing on gloomy may appear dull. Therefore, personally, I avoid wearing black clothing when I need to take photos. If wearing black clothing is necessary, it is essential to pay attention to matching appropriate accessories, such as bright scarves, silk scarves paired with hats and gloves in the same color scheme. Surrounding the face with bright colors can enhance facial expressions, resulting in better complexion in photos!
When wearing the same dark overcoat, adding a red hat and a red scarf creates a different overall look, resulting in more varied photos. This combination works well not only for outdoor shots but also indoors, producing excellent effects.
Even in the dimly lit grand palace, wearing a dark coat and complementing accessories like a scarf and hat in the right colors can still result in beautiful photos.

Traveling can sometimes be affected by cloudy or rainy weather. During such times, it is advisable to avoid not only dark-colored clothing but also light-colored attire. Due to the lack of vibrant sunlight, both dark and light colors can easily appear blurry and out of focus. For instance, in the photo where a girl is posing with the London Bridge, wearing dark pants and a beige jacket may seem appropriate under normal circumstances. However, on a gloomy and rainy day, this outfit choice can make the entire picture look dull and unfocused, lacking aesthetic appeal. In contrast, in another photo, a girl is wearing a bright red coat paired with black stockings and boots on a cloudy day. Despite the unfavorable weather conditions, the red color stands out and keeps the focus on the person, allowing for a visually appealing shot even in dim lighting. Therefore, it is recommended to opt for vibrant colors when selecting outfits for photography on cloudy or rainy days.
Always dress appropriately for all occasions
When traveling abroad, it is common for people to wear sneakers or athletic shoes for the sake of convenience. However, I recommend that women consider opting for more casual flat sandals during the summer and flat boots during the winter. This choice can enhance the overall stylish appearance in photographs, avoiding a situation where the shoes become a drawback in full-body shots despite a well-dressed outfit.
Enhance your beauty and become the center of attention by using accessories to add the finishing touch
For formal evening occasions, you can enhance your outfit by accessorizing with earrings, a necklace, and a clutch purse paired with high heels to elevate your overall look. Remember to choose a suitable clutch purse, adorn yourself with elegant earrings to blend in with the setting, and make a grand entrance to leave a lasting impression.
Accessories such as earrings and necklaces may only become apparent in close-up shots or detailed views, but earrings play a crucial role in overall styling. A simple dress can transform into an elegant gown when paired with elaborate accessories. Therefore, when taking photos in many opulent palaces in Europe, using accessories to complement the attire and blend into the grandiose setting is essential. Necklaces, in particular, have a finishing touch effect. A plain top, when paired with a remarkable necklace, can elevate the entire photograph. For example:

Originally wearing a simple white top with a light blue skirt looked ordinary, but paired with a long colorful gemstone chain, it looked noble and elegant.
Another alternative is to wear more glamorous formal attire, such as those with sequins, silk, or satin, as shown in the reference image. When visiting the New York Palace Cafe in Budapest, wearing casual attire like T-shirts with jeans or sweaters with long skirts would clash with the luxurious background. Therefore, it is recommended to dress more elegantly for such occasions to capture better photos, as illustrated in the reference image where I am wearing a sequin gown that complements the background perfectly. Imagine wearing a T-shirt and jeans in the same setting – it would certainly feel out of place! In conclusion, when taking travel photos, dressing to blend in with the surroundings as much as possible can result in beautiful photographs.
It is recommended to wear light and elegant attire when taking photos inside the opera house
When traveling to Europe, you will have the opportunity to visit many renowned opera houses. As these venues are often dimly lit, it is advisable to wear bright colors. However, it is recommended to avoid wearing red, as the decor of most opera houses is predominantly red. To ensure that you stand out and complement the grandeur of the opera house, opt for an elegant attire carefully chosen for the occasion. For instance, during my visit to the Phoenix Opera House in Venice, I wore a black and white lace gown, which not only provided a striking effect in the audience area but also worked well for capturing photos in other spaces within the opera house.
Within the interior of the Milan Scala Opera House, the predominant color scheme is red. To stand out amidst the sea of red, I opted for a white-based blue floral dress.
