The Hideaway English Town Durham
Healing journey
~ The Charm of a British Town Cannot be Resisted~
Healing my Body, Soul and Mind
in Durham
Traveling in the north from Inverness to Rye in the south, I am deeply fascinated by the beauty of the small British town. When exploring the small town, I sometimes find her quiet and secret, sometimes feel her simplicity and closeness to the people, and sometimes revel in her romantic beauty.
On a weekend holiday to study in the UK, I took a train to travel. On the way back, I was asleep on the train. I accidentally opened my eyes and saw a beautiful castle. I mistakenly thought I was in a dream, but the sound of the railway station's radio suddenly awakened. It made me realize that the beauty in front of me is real. Therefore, I accidentally discovered this paradise Durham, I visited this small town and even studied in the Durham University to get my MBA degree a few years later.
Durham is a small town in northeastern England. Its rocky churches, castles and monasteries are classics of European architecture, comparable to Avignon in France and Prague, Czech Republic. Durham is translated as Durham on Google Maps, but in fact the English pronunciation should be closer to the Chinese "德倫". Many foreigners made the wrong pronunciation, even the local Durham University international students mistakenly translated "Dulun" "
World Heritage Site Durham Castle
Durham Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site Durham Castle (Durham Castle) was built in 1072 AD. It is located in the Durham Peninsula, on the top of a hill on the banks of the Weir River, opposite Durham Church. Durham Castle was originally used to demonstrate the power of the Norman King in Northern England. After Norman conquered England in 1066, the people of northern England still maintained a "barbaric and capricious" character. Conquering the small peninsula of William I of England, which is easy to defend and difficult to attack, ordered the construction of this castle connecting the land fortress. Later, streets and markets gradually developed on the peninsula, forming what is today Durham.
Durham Castle was originally the residence of the Bishop of Durham. Until the bishop chose Auckland Castle as his residence, the castle was not owned by the University College of Durham University since 1840 as the office and student dormitory of Durham University. A large number of graduates gather here during the university graduation ceremony in January and June every year, waiting to participate in the graduation ceremony held at Durham Cathedral. Currently, the castle is only open to tourists with guided tours. The hall of the castle was built by Bishop Antony Bek in the 14th century. It was once the largest hall on the island of Great Britain. It was not until the end of the 15th century that Bishop Richard Foxe reduced its size, but the hall still had 14 Meters high and more than 30 meters long.

Climb the 66-meter-high church bell tower to overlook Durham.
Small and quiet Durham city center
A small town derived from Durham Castle. Because Durham University is located, it is currently a university town. The economy of the town depends on the consumption of local students. At the weekend, there are many local British tourists. Overall, it is not a well-known British tourist. Attractions, but because it is not a popular itinerary for tourists, here, you can experience the life of a real British town, but you can also admire the grandeur of the world cultural heritage Durham Cathedral. The popular class is suitable for those who want a short-term trip of 1 to 2 days. People, the picture below is a small road leading to Durham Cathedral. There are many shops, bars and restaurants along the road. It is a popular place for locals to drink and have fun at night and have meals on weekends.
Durham Miners Association Gala
In the 19th century, the coal mining industry in Durham emerged. Since 1871, the Durham Miners Festival has been held every year. The local area still maintains this traditional event. Every July, the Miners Association of Durham will hold a celebration parade, and there are small band detours.Although it is small in scale and only a local event, it brings a commotion to the small town and is full of excitement.
Framwellgate Bridge is a local cross Weir River several bridges (River Wear) is among the most important and also the most popular one, there are many cross-strait bridge cafe, standing here, you can look up to The towering landscape of Durham Castle and the lush jungle on the Weir River, but there have also been incidents of local people drinking excessively and falling into the river and drowning here. Therefore, I personally do not recommend walking down the bridge and walking along the Weir River. How to play, because the Weir River gives people a gloomy feeling
Must See Attractions
I personally recommend that if you are tired, you can choose a cafe with open-air seats on both sides of the bridge, so that you can rest while looking up at the magnificent view of Durham Castle.
Super Healing Tea Room
The cakes in this store are probably the best I have ever eaten in Durham. It is located on the second floor and the sign is not obvious, but the cakes are fresh home-made cakes, not factory-made frozen cakes, The ingredients are real and the portion is not hesitating. There are also meals, but I usually come here to drink afternoon tea and eat super rich cakes to heal myself, especially when the sun goes down too early in the winter.
Exotic cuisine has everything
Because the nationalities of Durham University students are very diverse, so there are very international dining options in this small place, whether it is African, Middle Eastern, Chinese, Thai, Italian restaurants, etc. can satisfy discerning tourists
My favorite Asian food in Durham
Although it is a small city, the food culture can be very rich. There are not only large Chinese restaurants, Thai restaurants, Italian cuisine, etc., but also small Japanese restaurants. Because the local all-you-can-eat Chinese food is not authentic, I strongly recommend the local The two Thai-style restaurants, and the snack bar attached to an Asian grocery store, are operated by Thais, so the taste is almost the same as that in Taiwan, and the price is lower in Asian grocery stores, but the price of out-of-town food in the UK is absolutely higher than that in Taiwan. It's not cheap, so it's not cheap to describe its price. Of course, there are also simple meals commonly found in British cafes, grilled + lettuce salad
My secret castle
Although Durham is very small, I can meet acquaintances from time to time on the road, but I still found a cafe that can be used as a secret castle. A corner of the restaurant, a large green window view adds to the atmosphere and joy of dining
The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, you can choose sandwiches, yogurt and cold drinks, etc., or you can choose hot buffet, breakfast is a traditional English breakfast, lunch is Western-style grilled and other options, if you omit lunch, here is The afternoon tea is rich in quantity, shared by 2~4 people, and it is economical and affordable. It is definitely the first choice. You can spend a leisurely afternoon tea time here. Since I prefer Asian cuisine, I mostly come here for breakfast and afternoon tea
